This guide is designed for those who are enrolled in the DNP progam of Samuel Merritt University.

Directions for Searching SMU Databases

Database Name Search for a Named Research Instrument Search for Research Instruments on a Topic
CINAHL Plus
  • Click on More in the top blue toolbar.
  • Choose Indexes.
  • Under Browse an Index:Select - click on the arrow to see the menu.
  • Choose Instrumentation.
  • In the Browse for: box - type name of the research instrument.
  • Click Browse.
  • From the results list click the box(es) of the one(s) you want.
  • Click the Add button to put them in the top box.
  • Click the Search button.
  • In CINAHL Headings search for a subject.
  • To limit your results click the Edit link.
  • Scroll down to Publication Type box, choose Questionnaire/Scale, Research Instrument, Research Instrument Utilization, Research Instrument Validation (hold the Control Key down to select all of them).
  • Click the Search button.
Rehabilitation Reference Center
  • Click the Advanced Search link.
  • In the Document Type list unclick everything except Research Instrument.
  • In the Find box type the name of the research instrument.
  • Click Search
  • Click the Advanced Search link.
  • Click on CINAHL Headings link on the left.
  • Type your subject into the box and click Browse.
  • Choose one or more boxes and click Search Database.
  • If there are Research Instruments on your subject a green tab with that name will appear as one of your sets of results. Click on it to access those results.
PubMed @ SMU
  • Click on the Advanced Search link.
  • Open the drop-down menu next to All Fields and choose Title/Abstract.
  • In the box opposite, type the name of the research instrument.
  • Click the Show Index link.
  • Choose one or more from the list (hold the Control Key down to choose more than one).
  • Click Add to Search Box then click the Search button.
  • Search MeSH for your subject and get those results.
  • Search MeSH separately for "scale", "test", and "questionnaire".
  • Combine the searches for scale, test, and questionnaire together with OR.
  • Combine your subject search with the results of the combined scale, test and questionnaire search with AND.
PsycINFO
  • Choose the Multi-Field Search option.
  • Open the drop-down menu next to All Fields.
  • Choose Tests & Measures.
  • In the box opposite type the name of your research instrument.
  • Click the Search button.
  • Choose the Advanced Ovid Search link.
  • In the box type a subject and click the Search button.
  • From the results list click the box(es) for the one(s) you want and click the Continue button.
  • Click the Additional Limits button (lower left corner)
  • Click the box for Tests & Measures in the first column, then click the Limit a Search button.
  • If you wish to be more specific under Additional Limits, you can scroll through the Classification Codes box (codes 2220-2229) and choose the one(es) you want (holding the Control Key down if you choose more than one), then click the Limit a Search button.
ERIC
  • Choose the Multi-Field Search option.
  • Open the drop-down menu next to the 1st All Fields and choose Title.
  • Open the drop-down menu next to the 2nd All Fields and choose Abstract.
  • Open the drop-down menu next to the 3rd All Fields and choose Identifiers.
  • On the left side change AND to OR twice.
  • In the 3 search boxes type the name of your research instrument and click the Search button.
  • Click the Advanced Ovid Search link.
  • Type a subject/keyword in the box and click Search.
  • Click the box(es) next to the term(s) you wish to search and click the Continue button.
  • Click the Additional Limits button.
  • In the Publication Types box choose Tests/Questionnaires and click the Limit a Search button.
ProQuest Dissertations & Theses
  • In the box opposite Citation and Abstract type the name of your research instrument.
  • Click Search
  • If you only want to find citations that refer to your research instrument in the title, then change Citation and Abstract to Title and click Search.
  • Click the More Search Options link.
  • Search for a keyword or subject using the Lookup Subjects or Lookup Keywords links.
  • If your subject/keyword isn't there, type it into the box opposite Citation and Abstract.
  • In the box opposite Lookup Keywords type Research instrument OR Questionnaire.
  • Click Search.
