New PubMed: Clinical Queries

This guide shows how to use the new version of PubMed that NLM rolled out in May 2020

Clinical Queries

Clinical Queries are search tools designed to retrieve targeted results to clinical questions. Access clinical queries from the PubMed home page under the Find menu (shown below).

There are 3 search filters available from this page:

  • Clinical Study Categories
  • Systematic Reviews
  • Medical Genetics

Enter your term(s) and click Search. You may choose your Category, Scope or Topic. The first 5 retrieved citations are displayed. Scroll down to view the next image.

Clinical Study Search

The Clinical Study Categories are a specialized set of queries designed for clinicians. They are based on research done by R. Brian Haynes, M.D., Ph.D. at McMaster University in Canada.

Five study categories or filters are provided:

  • Etiology
  • Diagnosis
  • Therapy (default)
  • Prognosis
  • Clinical prediction guides

Two scope filters are provided:

  • Broad: Sensitive search – It's a more comprehensive search that includes relevant citations but probably less relevant; will retrieve more (default)
  • Narrow: Specific search – will get more precise, relevant citations but less retrieval (shown below)

Clinical Queries: Medical Genetics Searches
This feature finds citations related to various topics in medical genetics. These filters were developed in conjunction with the staff of GeneReviews: Genetics Disease Online Reviews at GeneTests, University of Washington, Seattle.
Seven topics or filters are provided:

  • Diagnosis
  • Differential Diagnosis
  • Clinical Description
  • Management
  • Genetic Counseling
  • Molecular Genetics
  • Genetic Testing

Example
If you are researching the clinical aspect of gene therapy for cystic fibrosis,

Enter the search terms: gene therapy for cystic fibrosis in the search box and click on the Search button. Then, select the category and scope as follow:

  • Category: Therapy
  • Scope: Broad
  • PubMed will display the results. See the image below that includes applied category, scope and topic.

The search result in medical genetic includes all of the topics by default. However, the image below displays the search result filtered with Diagnosis.
