This guide is designed for those who are enrolled in the DNP progam of Samuel Merritt University.

What is a research instrument?

"A research instrument is a testing device for measuring a given phenomenon, such as a paper and pencil test, a questionnaire, an interview, a research tool, or a set of guidelines for observation."

Mosby's Dictionary of Medicine, Nursing & Health Professions

Tip

Try searching Dissertations and Theses Global for the instrument if you have the name for it. It sometimes has the complete instrument in the appendix

Published Vs Unpublished Research Instruments

What is the difference between a "published" and an "unpublished" test/research instrument?

  • Published tests are tests which may be purchased from a commercial test publisher. Sometimes special training is required to administer commercial tests. Standard copyright restrictions apply.
  • Unpublished tests are tests which are published by an individual author or small group of authors, often in a journal article or book chapter. Copyright restrictions may apply to such tests.
